Child & Youth Development
"Volunteers of America offered my son and I the comprehensive resources that have been vital to our success as a family."
All parents want the best for their children. This includes Sara whose son Jason attends Volunteers of America's ECEAP Preschool. For many families, preschool is an expensive luxury that is often sacrificed. Luckily, Sara and Jason found the ECEAP Preschool supported by Volunteers of America.
Now that Jason is in a structured, diverse, and educational environment, Sara is confident her son has the tools he needs to succeed. The preschool program doesn't only help Jason, Volunteers of America has helped Sara; "knowing where else to go for food, housing, parenting classes, help in paying utilities: all is necessary for me to provide the best I can for my son."
About half of US children start kindergarten unprepared, and children who come from low-income and struggling homes, are the most at risk. Studies show how critical it is to combat this and to help kids feel successful from the VERY START. It could literally mean the difference for their lives.
We improve school-readiness by offering local child care providers easy, centralized information about appropriate training and resources. We provide access to books and literature to develop strong literacy skills, and a love for reading. We also recognize that as children grow, they need positive role models or mentors. Programs like Mentoring Children of Promise and Words Travel support children and families with an incarcerated parent, giving children and young people positive life experiences upon which to draw. As a whole our Child & Youth Development Services offer support and care for the future itself: Western Washington’s children.
