Sky Valley Youth Development

Encouraging Positive Youth Development

The stereotype in rural communities is that there is not much to do. And if you ask around, there are as many individuals as studies and reports that conclude unstructured time, especially for youth, opens to the door to many potential community problems including substance abuse, gang violence and more.

As many of these issues come into to SkykomishValley, Volunteers of America Community Resource Center is tackling the issue head on and asking local residents to join in the fight.  Feel free to email the Center or call 360-793-2400  to discuss your interest and ideas, join one of our advisory councils, or support an effort listed below that we already have in place.

Safe Stop:  where youth go on Saturday nights in the Valley
This Saturday night leisure activity program is popular local middle and high schoolers.  An average of 70-100 youth flock to Sultan High School every week from 8:00-11:00pm to hang out with each other, and to enjoy the variety of activities which include pickup basketball games, scheduled dances and more.

If you enjoy promoting activities, and have a heart to work with teens looking for an positive weekend experiences with friends, we would love to hear from you!  Email us or call 360-793-2400.

Youth Advisory Council:  involving youth in community solutions
We have engaged local youth interested in taking an active role in the community.  It is encouraging to see how they jump in with energy, enthusiasm and a can-do attitude to address issues related to themselves and their peers, as well as the community as a whole.

They could use YOUR support.  Email us or call 360-793-2400 to find out how.

Youth Action Team: inspiring peers, impacting community
Sultan High School students represent Sky Valley in VOA's Youth Action Team among other teens in Snohomish County. Their job:  to engage their peers in community impact projects that will address local issues and inspire life-long service.

Follow what they are doing, and please email us or call 360-793-2400 to find out how you can support their efforts.

Pre-Headstart and ECEAP Community Preschool
Most of a child’s brain development occurs before they are five-years-old. That is why we offer early learning and development programs to support young children and their families during this critical stage of life.

Our ECEAP Preschool gives children of low-income families ages three to five-years-old the social, emotional and developmental tools they need to be ready and successful in kindergarten and beyond.

The Pre-Headstart program works with low-income families and their chidlren ages birth to three-years-old. The program uses a home base model providing the parents with support from a Early Childhood Specialist. The Specialist works with the parents and child on development, growth stages, nutrition, socialization, and parenting tools.
