Volunteer Mentor
General Functions:
Mentoring Children of Promise is a community based program matching caring, consistent adult mentors to children with an incarcerated parent. The child and mentor choose what sorts of activities to do based on personal preferences. Some examples of activities include: volunteering together, swimming, hiking, cooking, playing or watching sports, scrap-booking, helping with homework, gardening, some have even gone rock climbing.
Qualifications:
Volunteer mentors must be 21 or older. Mentors must be willing and able to go through screening process which includes written application, background check, training, and an in-home interview. Must be able to act appropriately with low income and diverse populations in a non-discriminatory manner.
Principle Activities:
- Develop appropriate relationship with a youth
- Report monthly to staff
- Attend program events as available
End Results:
- Youth feel more confident, do better in school and are less likely to use drugs and alcohol
- Youth feel listened to and supported by an adult
- Mentor gains a sense of pride by positively impacting the community
