Over the years, Volunteers of America has fostered many local community-building partnerships.  We are adept at listening and responding to community input.   

In fact, this approach is so effective that community leaders have sought out our organization for years to help solve the region’s most critical human service issues.  Volunteers of America continues to seek opportunities to build community capacity for human service resources by consistently opening its doors, its resources and its pocketbook to fill local, unmet needs.

Like anyone, Mischelle Benham of Marysville never planned on being without a home. But when she and her two teenage children became homeless due an intense domestic violence and drug-related situation, she realized that they had nowhere to go. She called shelter after shelter after shelter. She was told that she could not be housed together with both her teenage daughter and son. She was given the option to split up, or continue to sleep together in their car. It took a split-second to decide separation was NOT an option.

Senior Companion Fausta Sawal recently accepted the national, high profile ’Spirit of Service’ award annually given to outstanding Americans by the Corporation for National and Community Service. She was selected from over 16,000 other Senior Companions across the country for her spirit of national service, demonstration of exceptional service and leadership, and influence as a role model for others in her community.
