Volunteers of America Expands Recreation Programs for the Developmentally Disabled

Volunteers of America is reorganizing programs in East Snohomish County to maximize our resources and service potential for the developmentally disabled.

This spring, we are expanding our recreation services for individuals with developmental disabilities to identify, develop and offer even more year-round opportunities.

The demand for alternative recreational opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities has grown, as has demand for Volunteers of America’s services in Sultan/Sky Valley. Therefore, Volunteers of America will discontinue the use of the portion of the property as a full-fledged summer camp program.  Instead they will expand their year-round recreation opportunities, freeing up the acreage for expanded service to the Sky Valley community.

Volunteers of America’s will use their Sultan/Sly Valley facilities to address emergent community needs.  Volunteers of America currently operates a preschool for low income children (ECEAP), an alternative high school, and transitional and permanent housing and services for homeless individuals at their facility in Sultan. Having access to the adjacent Camp Volasuca acreage gives Volunteers of America the opportunity to fundamentally rethink how they use their Sultan facilities.

We have expanded and evolved as an agency over the years. And we are always evaluating the best ways to serve our clients and our community. While we honor the long history of Camp Volasuca and the many great summer experiences it created for those we serve, we are excited about these new opportunities to better serve adults with developmental disabilities and our Sultan/Sky Valley community. This is truly a win-win," explained Phil Smith, President/CEO of Volunteers of America Western Washington.
