Children and seniors are the most frequent food bank visitors

Hunger hurts.  And it makes it hard for children to concentrate at school, adults to focus at work, and for anyone to generally enjoy a sense of well-being.

Volunteers of America learned very early on that it is only when people have this very basic need satisfied that they can concentrate on doing what is needed to bring quality to their life.  Ask Henry and his mom.

It is time to eliminate hunger from our region

Never before have there been so many hungry people in our region.  Not during the Depression of the 1930s.  Not during the regional commerical industry strikes of the 1970s. It is startling how many in our local communities do not have enough food at home, yet it is quite hopeful to know that Volunteers of America has positioned itself to help those in need.

Many local economic factors contribute to this demand on our food bank services, and we find that the vast majority of our main customers - children and seniors - come from working households or those on fixed incomes.

Everett and Greenwood Food Banks

Volunteers of America operates two food banks, one serving Everett residents and one serving NW Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.  Together, they serve over 600 families per day with a three-day/nine-meal emergency food.  The Greenwood Food Bank coordinates a fresh produce home-delivery program that delivers to over 55 homebound  seniorsdisabled individuals each month.  The Everett Food Bank makes monthly food deliveries to over 200 homebound seniors each month. The tragedy is that we often do not have the inventory to meet the demand we face each day.  Private support is the ONLY WAY we can serve the need.  Read about our recent crisis averted - no items on food bank shelves - through community generosity, and please consider how you might help sustain our ability to feed hungry people into the future.

Snohomish County Food Bank Distribution Center

Imagine a football stadium full of food ... four million pounds of food ... this is how much inventory Volunteers of America processes each year through its food bank distribution center to the region’s community food banks and daily feeding programs which feed almost 85,000 local residents each year.  See the list of Snohomish County food banks that we distribute to each week.

Like the food banks, our distribution center relies on community support for inventory, with food drives providing the staple that supplies other local food distribution programs.  The distibution center also leverages community support to purchase food in  bulk, which can be processed and broken down for individual families.  Our facility offers nearly 8,000 square feet of storage space which enables us to pick up, process, store and distribute fresh, frozen, dry and canned food products, as well as code-dated products, discontinued and surplus items.
